Did you know that thousands of people are homeless across Ireland?

While the housing crisis is reaching every month a new peak, more people face homelessness every day. Dublin area is severely affected by the issue, with hundreds of families and individuals living in hotels, hubs, queuing for food and primary needs, as reported by Focus Ireland.

This is a state of emergency and local communities and charities are vital to support people in need.

The idea of Revived Yarn is born in 2017 as a non-profit, self-managed community, to provide a sustainable way to warm people affected by homelessness and poverty.

Why helping through yarn?

There are hundreds of knitters and crocheters in Dublin, and several groups meet regularly in town. What brings these people together is not only their creativity but especially the enjoyment of making things for others, the sense of community and the social engagement. What’s common to this category of crafter is the cumulation of leftovers, either the results of an unwanted purchase or the scraps left from a big project. These usually end up being stored in a box waiting for a chance to be used again in a not so near future.

Through donations of yarn leftovers, the Dublin knitting community has the potential to help people in need, by keeping them warmer during this and many winters to come.
Also, by giving a new value to what was once considered scrap, we can reduce the amount of waste introduced into the environment and the CO2 emissions that would otherwise be released if we decided to produce and buy new yarn for our purpose.

Revived Yarn donate the finished items knitted by their volunteers to communities assisting people affected by homelessness and poverty in Dublin city:

  • Homeless Street Cafè

  • Bridges of Hope

  • Muslim Sisters of Eire

  • The Capuchin Centre

  • and many others.

Revived Yarn was winning project at the social contest SOUP in November 2017 and is currently looking for volunteers.
